Why Am I Gaining Weight With My New Workout Routine?


I get asked by many of my challengers why they see the numbers on scale increase after they start working out. Believe it or not this is a common question and I myself have even fallen into this trap. There are actually a few possible reasons for weight gain when you start a new workout or workout for the first time. The trick is not to give up, but stand your ground and continue the program.  You WILL see inches change and the numbers on the scale WILL start to go down....I PROMISE!

My first question I always ask is "Are you following the nutrition plan and getting in at least half your weight in ounces of water daily?" If the answer is yes and after evaluating that your meal plan is on point, then it may be exercise related..


If you happen to be in the percentile that gain weight after starting a new program, odds are it is NOT FAT! The most common reason you gain weight after you start working out is due to muscle tears and inflammation (water weight). When you workout it causes small tears in your muscle fibers which is called microtrauma. You know the feeling you get when you start a new program or use muscles you don't normally use and you become sore? That is microtrauma and the reason you feel sore after the workout. Don't worry these tears are ok and is the reason you become stronger! During the healing process the inflammation actually allows the white blood cells to move to the "injured or traumatized" area and do their job.  The muscle fibers become tougher as the body heals and repairs, we call this process adaptation. This process could take a few days or even weeks to see the water weight diminish and the scale to adjust.

If you are a female please keep in mind that you could gain water weight in another way. So pay attention to your "time of the month" and see if that could be a factor to the weight gain.


 If you don't remember anything else remember the numbers on the scale... NO ONE SEES! It is the inches that count in my book because that is what my friends and family will notice. Don't get caught up on weight loss!
