What Are Rest Days?

Rest days are important to any workout routine to give the body an opportunity to recover. During rest days you want to place more emphasis on sleep. Experts  recommend getting more than seven hours of sleep per night so muscles have time to repair and recover. Do you get seven hours of sleep? I'm sure if you have little ones in the home seven hours sounds like a dream. Trust me, I've been there!

Rest Days, Recovery and Active Recovery
I hear often people say that they are on a recovery day when they actually mean they are on a rest day. These terms are NOT the same! During REST DAYS you avoid activity or exercise that gets the blood pumping. The RECOVERY occurs while in the rest state and allows the body time to replace and rebuild tissue and fluids. ACTIVE RECOVERY means you remain active, but during your regular workouts you use less intensity while still being in the recovery process.

I hope this clears up some confusion with the terms rest day, recovery day and active recovery. Don't forget to add rest days to your workout schedule so the body can heal and rebuild. I like to use my Sundays as my rest days and focus on being 100% with my family. It is important to recharge!!!! The body is a machine and can perform correctly and enhance your results if taken care of. You wouldn't expect your car to run at optimal performance levels without maintenance.
